During the second world war, Hitler was the most famous and well recognised person in the world, and has gone down in history as being one of the most evil people to have ever existed. His death officially came at the end of the war when the allied forces moved into Berlin, however Hitler would not allow himself to be captured and killed himself in one of his bunkers on the 30 April, 1945.

After his death his henchmen poured petrol over him and burnt the body beyond all recognition, so the story goes anyway. With all the crazy projects he was up to at the time it wouldn’t be out the question to assume he had a few tricks up his sleeve, leading to a whole range of speculation about if it was indeed his body that was found in the bunker.

Here are the craziest theories about what really happened to Germany’s most powerful leader:

1) He moved to Argentina

During the war Argentina officially took a neutral stance, but being at odds with Brazil who joined the Allied forces may have caused them to swing more towards the Axis forces. It is well known that Argentina acted as a Nazi sympathiser and after the war hundreds of German officials moved to the country to avoid answering for their crimes.

Apparently Hitler escaped Germany before the allies moved in and travelled to Argentina, with the most likely method being by U-boat. There are 2 main theories about what he did in the country, with the first being that he lived out his days in a Bavarian style mansion deep in the mountains, and the other is that he pretended to be a priest and lived in a small village and worked at the local church.

All accounts of him moving to Argentina come from people who “think” they saw him there, or people who saw someone with expensive Nazi loot like a painting and some how made the connection. There is no credible evidence at all that he moved there, with every single source being from someone who simply claimed they saw something or someone that looked like him.

2) Hitler escaped as a civilian

Since his appearance was so distinctive, it would be easy for him to go unrecognised without his hair and moustache, and if he completely changed his appearance he could easily have slipped past the allied forces dressed as a normal civilian.

This theory was suggested as the official story of his death was later found to be suspicious. When allied soldiers entered the bunker he apparently killed himself in, they found some bone fragments within the ashes. Claiming them to be that of Hitler himself they were held in Russia, but long after the war when more advanced equipment came out, DNA analysis revealed they belonged to a woman under the age of 40.

He may have killed himself and had his body burned, but it seems that the one in the bunker wasn’t it, leading to the theory he escaped the country on foot. Towards the end of the war the allies had firm control of Europe and the worlds oceans, and travelling any large distance by boat wouldn’t have been possible, but walking to a quiet village in the German countryside would be.

3) He was captured by or stuck a deal with Stalin

It was the Soviet forces who first entered the city of Berlin, and Hitler and Stalin had been arch enemies throughout the war. The idea that Hitler somehow managed to strike a deal with Stalin for not only his life, but for the chance to live out his days somewhere in Russia is pretty much impossible.

The more likely scenario is that when the Soviet forces came into Berlin they captured Hitler alive and took him back to Russia. The soldiers that personally brought Hitler to Stalin would be well rewarded indeed, and if this was the case then Stalin would most likely have kept Hitler for himself, most likely to kill him in some horrible manner.

If Stalin told the world he had the most wanted man on the planet he would be put under pressure to hand him over, and if he did really have him then he’d most likely have had a personal hand in his death. If this theory does have any truth to it we’ll never know, as the Soviet union weren’t exactly willing to reveal their secrets to the rest of the world.
